Today, a woman basking in the halo of a ring light told me that if I commented “BLOATED”, she would *personally* send me her super special gut-healthy, ultra-concentrated, cold-pressed, non-GMO, filtered microbial and essential vitamin nectar juice recipe. Just for me! I don’t even know what half of these words mean, but @glow.with.kinsleigh doesn’t have a single pore on her face, so her gut microbiome must be thriving. Her bio calls her “your 24/7 gut-health bestie”—honestly, who couldn’t use a bestie?

So, I open the comments. I start typing: *B… L… O…*

*Wait.* *Do I need to capitalize it? What if Kinsleigh doesn’t see my comment if it’s in lowercase?* I can’t risk missing out on this special nectar juice over a formatting mistake. I scroll down to check how others are doing it. Thirteen thousand other people have commented “BLOATED”. Page after page of the exact same word. It’s incredible: thousands of identical strangers, offering up our symptoms in abdominal solidarity. I want Kinsleigh to see that I’m taking this seriously, too.

*A… T… E… D…* I press send.

Five seconds later, a DM arrives with a link and a cheerful exclamation mark:

“Hi friend! Here is the link to my super special gut-healthy, ultra-concentrated, cold-pressed, non-GMO, filtered microbial and essential vitamin nectar juice recipe. Click below to find out!”

Wow, she’s so fast. I wonder how she manages to answer all 13,000 of us within seconds. Truly a wonder woman—blessed with flawless skin, a thriving microbiome, and endless love for her community. My heart pounding, I type back: “Thank you so much Kinsleigh! Do you wanna be friends?”

“Thanks for your message. I am out of the office from October 14 to October 19 with limited access to my inbox. For urgent matters, please contact my colleague Mary at mary@gmail.com.”

*Huh*, she must really like me to answer my messages even when she’s out of office.

The link opens to a checkout page asking for my email, my phone number, and fifty-two dollars. *Whoa*.I thought the recipe was free. Fifty-two dollars is a lot for a juice recipe, but she called me “friend” in her DM, and friends don’t overcharge friends. I text my mom if I can borrow her credit card.

Mom immediately calls me. She asks why on earth I just commented that I’m “BLOATED” on a public post. I tell her it is for the juice. She asks why the whole internet needs to know about the details of my digestion. I tell her she doesn’t understand. Thirteen thousand other people did it too, so if anything, I’m late. I tell her we can discuss this later—right now, I just need her credit card number before the recipe sells out.

That evening, Lily from math suddenly sent me a reel of celery juice for chronic bloating. She’s never sent me anything before! She must want to be friends. Then Will from biology sends one about digestive enzymes. Then the girl who sits behind me in English replies to my “BLOATED” comment with her own “BLOATED”. By bedtime, forty-two of my followers have liked my comment. I've essentially announced my digestive distress to the entire student body, but my social life has never been better than this before.

The next day, my bestie Kinsleigh posts that if I comment “BROKE”, she’ll send me a free guide to becoming a millionaire by twenty-one. Commenting “SINGLE” gets me her signature dating course—which is perfect, because with about six months to prom, I’ll definitely be able to land a boyfriend in time. Oh, and she also says commenting “ACNE” gets me her secret list of niche Korean skincare products. Truly, nobody works harder for her followers than her.

I’ve started to notice something wonderful. While others waste time with messy friendships, Kinsleigh keeps ours clean and efficient. She’s given me a supportive online space to finally fix everything wrong with me. I’ve never felt so seen like this before.
